Instagram profile picture: size, full DP and how to change it

Instagram does not publish a size for profile pictures; it shows them as a small circle. Our advice: a square of at least 1080 × 1080 px, with your face in the middle and some space around it, so the circle does not cut your hair or chin. To change it in the app: Edit Profile, then Change Profile Photo (Change Photo on Android). AwaCut puts you on a clean colour first, offline.

  1. Pick a photo with a clear face

Good light, face toward the camera. The busy café behind you does not matter: it is about to go.

  2. Cut yourself out with AwaCut

Drop the photo into AwaCut and choose Custom, then type a colour such as #99F6E4, a light teal. You get the same photo on a plain background, at its full size, in about 4 seconds on a Mac Studio (M4 Max).

  3. Crop square, with room to spare

Leave some space above the head, so the full photo fits the circle. In the app: your profile, Edit Profile, Change Profile Photo (Change Photo on Android), pick the photo, then Done (Next on Android).

The AwaCut cutout on light teal (Custom, #99F6E4), the opposite of red hair on the colour wheel, so the curls stand out. Cropped square with space around the head.

Check it small

The same picture as a circle at 110 px, about the size on a profile page, and at 40 px, the size beside a comment or a message. The face still reads at both, because it fills the frame and the background is plain.

Three mistakes on Instagram profile pictures

  • Hair or chin cut by the circle

A tight crop looks fine as a square and loses the top of the head in the circle. Leave space.

  • Colour that blends with you

Red hair on orange, a green sweater on green: pick the colour on the other side of the wheel.

  • A tiny face

Instagram's circle is small. A full-body shot turns into a dot.

Fit the full photo in the circle

“Full DP” searches come from people whose photo gets cropped. A cutout fixes it: put yourself on a plain square with room around you, and the whole photo fits. AwaCut does it on your computer, with no upload and no credits: as many photos as you want, all year.

Try it on your own photos: the first 10 are free, no account.

Frequently asked questions

What size is an Instagram profile picture?

Instagram does not publish a size. Upload a square of at least 1080 × 1080 px; it is shown as a small circle, so keep your face in the middle.

How do I fit my full photo in my Instagram profile picture?

Make the photo square with space around you before uploading: cut yourself out, place the cutout on a plain square a little larger than you, and upload that. The circle then cuts only background.

How do I change my Instagram profile picture?

In the app, go to your profile and tap Edit Profile, then Change Profile Photo (Change Photo on Android). Choose the photo, then Done (Next on Android). On the web, click your profile photo.

How do I change the background of my Instagram profile picture?

Drop the photo into AwaCut and choose Custom to put yourself on a plain colour, or White, or Alpha for a transparent PNG. It runs offline on Mac, Windows and Linux.
