How to edit Shopify product photos, a whole catalog at a time

Each photo is saved as PNG, JPG or WebP at the original resolution as soon as it is ready. Compare Before and After on any of them, then add the files to your products in Shopify admin.

Shopify product image size, ratio and file type
Three things that decide how a collection page looks.
Shopify product image size: 2048 x 2048 for squares
Shopify's help pages say 2048 x 2048 pixels usually displays best for square product images. Each file can be up to 5000 x 5000 pixels (25 megapixels) and must be under 20 MB. AwaCut keeps the size you shoot: in our test, an 11-megapixel phone photo came out at about 16 MB as a transparent PNG and 4 to 9 MB on White. Photos larger than 5000 pixels need resizing before they go to Shopify.
One aspect ratio across the collection
Shopify suggests one consistent aspect ratio for main images, so products line up at the same size on collection pages. Shoot every product the same way: AwaCut keeps your framing and only replaces the background.
PNG or JPG for Shopify
Shopify names PNG as the best file type for most product images, followed by JPG. Export PNG for transparency, JPG on White for smaller files, or WebP, which Shopify also accepts.

How many product photos can I process at once?
As many as the folder holds: hundreds queue automatically at about 4 seconds each on a Mac Studio (M4 Max), offline. 500 photos take about 32 minutes. There are no credits, so reshooting a whole collection costs nothing beyond the flat $29 a year.
What size should Shopify product images be?
Shopify says 2048 x 2048 pixels usually displays best for square images, and takes files up to 5000 x 5000 pixels (25 megapixels) and under 20 MB. AwaCut never shrinks an export, so a 12-megapixel photo comes back at 12 megapixels. In our test, an 11-megapixel phone photo came out at about 16 MB as a transparent PNG, under the limit, and at 4 to 9 MB on White.
White, transparent or a brand colour: which is best for a Shopify store?
Any of them, as long as the whole catalog uses the same one. White is the safe default. Alpha gives transparent PNGs that sit on your theme's background. Custom takes any colour, so products match the store. The setting applies to the whole folder, so every product comes out the same.
Is AwaCut a Shopify app?
No. AwaCut is a desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux, not affiliated with Shopify. You cut the photos on your computer, then add the files to your products in Shopify admin as usual.
Can I use the cutouts commercially?
Yes, the exports are yours: product pages, ads, emails, social posts. No watermark is ever written into an export, the ten trial photos included.
Can I try it on my own product photos first?
Yes. The first 10 photos are free, at full resolution, with no account. Take a few of your usual shots and compare Before and After.
Does it work on Windows and Mac?
Yes. AwaCut runs on macOS 13.4 or later (Apple silicon), Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and Linux, and one licence covers 2 computers. Background removal runs on the computer itself, so it works offline too.
What happens if I cancel?
The app keeps working on the version you have. You can cancel anytime; you only stop getting new versions.
