JPG to transparent PNG

JPG to transparent PNG, a whole folder at once

Renaming a JPG to .png, or saving it again as PNG, does not make it transparent: the background is still there, now inside a PNG. To convert a JPG or JPEG to a transparent PNG, the background has to be removed and an alpha channel written. AwaCut does both: it finds the subject, removes everything around it and saves a PNG with real transparency. One image or a whole folder, on your own computer.

  1. Add the JPGs

Drag one JPG or a whole folder onto AwaCut. It also reads PNG, WebP, BMP and TIFF, and on a Mac the HEIC photos an iPhone takes. Nothing is uploaded.

  2. Set Alpha and PNG

Set the background to Alpha, the app's name for transparent, and the format to PNG. With Alpha, the app offers PNG or WebP only: JPG cannot store transparency, so it is not on the list.

  3. Check the edges, then export

Compare Before and After on a few files, then export the batch. Each PNG keeps the resolution and the file name of the JPG it came from.

Three ways to convert a JPG to PNG, and which one gives a transparent background

MethodWhat you getTransparent?
Renaming photo.jpg to photo.pngThe same JPG under a new name. Some programs open it, some refuse itNo
Saving as PNG in an editor or a JPG to PNG converterA real PNG with the same pixels, background included, in a larger fileNo
Removing the background, then saving as PNG (AwaCut)The subject alone, on an alpha channel, at the original resolutionYes

A JPG has no transparency to convert. The alpha channel only exists once something has decided which pixels are background.

Three reasons a JPG to PNG still has a background

  • Changing only the file extension

A new extension does not change what is inside the file. It is still a JPG, with its background, and some printers and upload forms reject it because the name and the contents do not match.

  • Using a format converter

A JPG to PNG converter writes the same pixels in a new format. The white wall or the table behind the subject comes along. Changing the format and removing the background are two different jobs.

  • Making the white transparent by colour

A colour key also removes white inside the subject, and the JPG compression around the edges leaves a pale fringe that shows on a dark shirt or a dark page. AwaCut separates the subject first, so white that belongs to it stays.

Why do it on your computer

Print shops get JPGs from customers every day: a logo saved from a website, a pet photo from a phone. Drop the day's folder into AwaCut and the transparent PNGs your DTF or sublimation workflow starts from come out together. Customer photos never leave your computer, and there are no credits: as many photos as you want, all year, for $29 a year.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a JPG transparent?

Not as a JPG: the format has no transparency, so any see-through part is filled in when the file is saved. Remove the background and save as PNG or WebP. AwaCut does both in one step.

Can I convert a whole folder of JPGs to transparent PNG at once?

Yes. Drag the folder in and every image is processed in one run, offline, at about 4 seconds per photo. 500 phone photos take about 32 minutes, with no per-image cost.

Will the PNG be sharp enough for DTF or sublimation printing?

The PNG has exactly the pixels of the JPG you put in: a 12-megapixel photo comes back at 12 megapixels. AwaCut does not add pixels, so a small JPG from a chat app or a website stays small. Ask the customer for the largest original they have.

I only want PNG and want to keep the background. Does AwaCut do that?

No. Every AwaCut export comes out without its background. To change only the format, the image tools built into Mac and Windows already do that for free.

Is it free?

The first 10 photos are free, at full resolution, with no watermark and no account. After that AwaCut is $29 a year, flat, for as many photos as you want. The PNGs are yours to use commercially.
