What 1,000 background removals actually cost

Credit tools price per image, subscriptions price per month, AwaCut prices per year. The three models produce wildly different bills for the same folder of photos, so we computed the real numbers from each vendor's own published pricing. No spreadsheet required on your side.

Full disclosure: we build AwaCut, one of the tools below. That is exactly why every claim here is dated, checkable on the linked pages, and why each tool gets credit for what it genuinely does best. If you spot anything outdated, write to us and we will correct it.

The short answers

  • Pay-as-you-go credits are the cheapest option only below 3 images per month; from the first real batch, flat pricing wins.

  • At 500 images per month, a year computes to €961 on the cheapest published credit plan versus $29 flat: roughly 33× apart.

  • Subscriptions cap the bill, but manual tools make time the real cost. Flat-priced local automation caps both.

Yearly machine cost per monthly volume, and the effective cost per 1,000 images. Computed July 2026.

Photoshop's subscription looks competitive at volume, but it removes backgrounds one image at a time, by hand. Even at an optimistic one minute per image, 500 images a month is 100 hours of clicking per year. The subscription is the smaller half of its price, which is why the table shows machine cost only.

The crossover

The math has exactly one honest crossover: pay-as-you-go credits win below 3 images per month. From the first real batch onwards the flat licence is cheaper, and the gap grows with every image: at 500 images per month, the same year computes to €961 on remove.bg's cheapest published plan and $29 on AwaCut.

Method

Every number is computed from prices read directly off each vendor's own pricing page in July 2026, linked below. Where yearly billing is cheaper, the discount is applied in the competitor's favor. remove.bg publishes EUR prices; AwaCut's $29 is compared at face value, which overstates our side at current exchange rates, so the rounding error always runs against us. Vendors that publish no per-volume prices get no invented numbers.

The tools that publish no volume prices

Slazzer and Evoto also sell credits, and Photoroom, Pixelcut and insMind sell subscriptions, but none of them publishes a per-volume price table we could compute from, so they get no invented numbers here. Their bills behave like the columns above: credits scale like remove.bg's column, subscriptions like Photoshop's minus the manual work. remove-bg.io and other in-browser tools are free within browser limits. The tool-by-tool detail lives in the comparison pages:

How much does it cost to remove the background from 1,000 images?

On remove.bg's cheapest published plan it computes to about €160 per 1,000 images at a 500-per-month pace (July 2026, EU prices, yearly billing in their favor). On AwaCut the whole year is $29 flat with unlimited images, so 1,000 images at that same pace cost about $4.83, and less the more you process.

Is remove.bg worth it at volume?

For occasional single images, yes: pay-as-you-go beats any licence below about 3 images per month. At bulk volume the credit model works against you: 500 images a month computes to €961 per year versus $29 flat. The AI quality is not the difference. The pricing model is.

What is the cheapest way to remove backgrounds at high volume?

Flat-priced local software. AI quality across tools has converged, so at volume the bill is decided by the pricing model alone: per-image credits grow linearly with your catalog, subscriptions cap the money but often meter the images, and a flat licence like AwaCut's $29/year decouples the bill from the volume entirely.
