How to make a transparent background for Canva, without Pro

Keep the background on Alpha
Alpha gives real transparency. Want a solid colour instead? Pick White or any Custom colour once for the folder. Outline adds a border if the design needs one.

Tips for a clean transparent background in Canva
Three things that decide how a cutout looks once it is in your design.
Export PNG from AwaCut, not JPG
Keep the background on Alpha and choose PNG or WebP, both lossless. JPG has no transparency, so it always comes with a solid background.
Cut the whole folder before you open Canva
Do every cutout in one run, then upload the PNGs to Canva. Each design afterwards starts from an image that is already transparent.
A white outline for social graphics
Outline puts a border around the cutout, any colour, thickness in pixels. A white outline gives the sticker look many social posts use, the same on every photo in the folder.
Why not Canva Pro for the cutouts?
If you design in Canva every day, Pro does much more than cutouts. If what you need is many cutouts, the sums differ: as of October 2026 Canva Pro is US$144 a year for one person. AwaCut is a flat $29 a year: as many photos as you want, all year.

Do I need Canva Pro to remove backgrounds?
Not with AwaCut. As of October 2026, Canva's Background Remover is on paid plans; Canva Pro is US$144 a year or US$18 a month for one person. AwaCut cuts out on your computer and you upload the transparent PNGs to Canva.
Is AwaCut part of Canva?
No. AwaCut is an independent desktop app, not affiliated with Canva. It makes the cutouts; Canva is where you design with them.
How many photos can I cut out at once?
As many as the folder holds: about 4 seconds each on a Mac Studio (M4 Max), 500 photos in about 32 minutes. As of October 2026, Canva's bulk removal takes folders of up to 50 uploaded images, one folder at a time.
Will the cutouts keep full resolution?
Yes. AwaCut keeps the original size: a 12-megapixel photo comes back at 12 megapixels. As of October 2026, Canva's Background Remover returns photos over 10 megapixels downscaled to 10 megapixels.
Does it need an internet connection?
No. AwaCut runs on your own computer, offline, and uploads nothing. Canva's Background Remover runs online. Removing backgrounds needs no connection; uploading the finished PNGs to Canva does.
I used remove.bg. What changes on 1 December 2026?
remove.bg's standalone service closes on 1 December 2026 and moves into Canva. If you want cutouts outside a design tool, AwaCut makes them on your computer, whole folders at a time, for a flat $29 a year.
Can I try it on my own photos first?
Yes. The first 10 photos are free, at full resolution, with no account and no watermark. Upload them to Canva and see how they sit in your design.
Does it work on Mac and Windows?
Yes. AwaCut runs on macOS 13.4 or later (Apple silicon), Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and Linux, and one licence covers 2 computers. On a Mac it also reads HEIC photos straight from an iPhone.
Can I download my Canva design with a transparent background without Pro?
No. As of October 2026, Canva's help says downloading a design with a transparent background needs a paid plan. What AwaCut changes is the photos you place: they are already transparent, so they sit on your design's own background without a box around them, on any Canva plan.
