Lightroom background remover
How to remove the background in Lightroom, and how to do a whole shoot
Lightroom and Lightroom Classic can select the background with AI (Masking > Background), but Adobe's help pages describe these masks as local adjustments: you change the light and colour of the background, it stays in the photo. We found no Adobe help page, as of 14 October 2026, that describes exporting a Lightroom photo with a transparent background. The practical way is to finish your edit in Lightroom, export the shoot as JPG or TIFF, and drop the whole folder into AwaCut for a transparent PNG or a White background.

Export the shoot from Lightroom
Finish your edit, select the photos and export them at full size as JPG or TIFF into one folder. Your colour and exposure work stays in the files.
Drop the folder into AwaCut
Choose Alpha for a transparent background, White for pure white (RGB 255), or Custom for any colour. Every photo is cut in one run, offline, about 4 seconds each.
Check, then export PNG or JPG
Look at hair and edges in the Before and After view. Export PNG or WebP to keep transparency, or JPG on White or Custom. The output keeps the original resolution.
What each tool does with the background
| Task | Lightroom and Lightroom Classic | AwaCut |
|---|---|---|
| Select the background with AI | Yes: Masking > Background or Select Subject, to adjust light, colour and detail in that area | Yes: it finds the subject and removes everything around it |
| Export with a transparent background | Not described in Adobe's Lightroom help. Classic exports JPEG, PSD, PSB, TIFF, PNG, DNG; Lightroom desktop exports JPG, TIF, DNG | Yes: PNG or WebP on Alpha, or JPG on White or a Custom colour |
| Apply to a whole shoot | Yes for masks: copy and paste or Sync them across selected photos | Yes: drop the folder, every photo is cut in one run |
From Adobe's help pages on Lightroom Classic masking (updated 29 September 2026) and export (updated 16 December 2025), and Lightroom desktop masking (updated 7 August 2026) and export (updated 24 April 2025), read on 14 October 2026. Keep Lightroom for the edit; use AwaCut for the cutout.
Three things that go wrong after a Lightroom export
Exporting small files for the cutout
A web-size export loses detail along hair and thin edges. Export at full size: AwaCut keeps the original resolution, so what you put in is what you get back.
Brightening the background instead of removing it
Pushing the background mask towards white gets close, but shadows and texture can stay, and the background is rarely pure white everywhere. A cutout on White is RGB 255 all the way to the edge.
Cutting photos one by one
A wedding or product shoot is hundreds of frames. Drop the whole export folder into AwaCut instead: 500 photos take about 32 minutes, and you can do something else meanwhile.
Why keep Lightroom and add AwaCut
Lightroom is where your colour, exposure and catalogue live. AwaCut does one job after it: the cutout, for a whole folder, on your own computer. Client photos are never uploaded. It costs $29 a year, flat, for as many photos as you want, all year.
Frequently asked questions
Can you remove the background in Lightroom?
Lightroom can select the background with AI and change how it looks: lighter, darker, softer, a different colour. Adobe's help pages describe this as local adjustment. We found no Adobe page, as of 14 October 2026, that describes deleting the background or exporting it as transparent.
Can Lightroom Classic export a PNG?
Yes. Adobe lists PNG among Lightroom Classic's export formats, next to JPEG, PSD, PSB, TIFF and DNG. Adobe's export page does not describe a transparent background in that PNG.
How do I change the background of a Lightroom photo?
Export the photo from Lightroom and drop it into AwaCut. Choose White or Custom for a new solid colour, or Alpha for a transparent PNG you can place on any background in another app.
Can I remove the background from a whole shoot at once?
Yes. Export the shoot from Lightroom into one folder and drop it into AwaCut. Every photo is cut in one run, offline, with no per-photo cost.
Does AwaCut read Lightroom exports?
Yes. It reads JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP and TIFF, and HEIC on a Mac. Raw files and Lightroom catalogues are not on that list, so export from Lightroom first.
Try it on your last shoot
Export 10 photos from Lightroom, cut them in AwaCut for free at full resolution, and zoom in on the hair.
